Glossary/Fake followers

What are fake followers?

Short answer

Fake followers are bought or inactive accounts among the followers of a profile. They raise the number visible under the username, but there is nobody behind them: they do not watch the content, do not comment and will not buy anything. For a brand that means a campaign sent into a void, and for a creator, statistics that cannot be defended when a collaboration is settled.

Where do fake followers come from?

From two sources. Some the creator buys themselves, so that the account looks bigger before the first conversations with brands. Some appear without their involvement: bots subscribe to random profiles, and accounts abandoned years ago stay on the follower list. So the mere presence of dead accounts is not yet proof of fraud — what matters is the scale and the way the account grew.

How do you recognise an artificially inflated account?

Four things you can check on your own, without paid tools:

  • Growth spikes: the account grew steadily, then gained followers over a few days even though nothing it published in that time became more popular.

  • Comments with no connection to the topic — emoji only and generalities along the lines of “great” under content about something specific.

  • A gap between the size of the account and its reach: a large profile, but views and reactions like a far smaller one.

  • An audience from countries where the brand does not sell. Ask for a screenshot with the breakdown by country and city.

Why is this a problem for the creator too?

Because dead accounts ruin the statistics they earn from. Content is shown first to part of the followers, and if that part does not react, the platform stops sending it further — the reach of every post suffers, including the ones that are not advertising. On top of that, a brand that compares the follower count with the campaign results simply will not come back with another task.

Already know what you need?

Describe the task: the format, the deadline and the amount or the barter. Creators from your industry will apply on their own, and you choose from the applications.

Frequently asked questions

Can you remove fake followers from an account?

You can block suspicious accounts by hand, and the platforms themselves remove some of the bots when they clean up. The number falls then, but engagement rises, so the profile becomes more credible to brands.

Does low engagement always mean bought followers?

No. The reason can also be a break in posting, a change of topic or the big reach of one viral piece of content that pulled in random people. It is worth asking the creator before you draw conclusions.

What should you ask a creator for to check the account is credible?

Screenshots from the statistics for the last few dozen days: the reach of posts, the audience breakdown by country and age, and the chart of follower growth. Only the owner of the profile sees that data.
