Glossary/Views

What are views?

Short answer

Views are the number of plays of a material, including repeats by the same person. If someone watches a reel several times or comes back to it a week later, every play is counted separately. That is why there are usually more views than viewers — this metric measures traffic around the content, not the size of the audience or sales.

What exactly are views?

The platform adds a view every time the material is played — including when the same person plays it again. The thresholds differ: in some places the recording merely appearing on screen already counts, in others only a moment of watching. It is worth asking about that before you compare results from two platforms, because the definitions are not shared.

How do you read views without getting it wrong?

Four habits that save you from bad conclusions:

  • Put views next to reach — only together do they show how many people watched the material and how often they came back to it.

  • Check whether the number covers one post or the whole profile. In reports those two things sometimes get glued into one.

  • Compare only the same format on the same platform: a reel and a blog post count views in completely different ways.

  • Look at watch time alongside the number of plays. A short bounce and watching to the end look identical in this metric.

Why do brands and creators look at this metric?

Views are the fastest sign of whether the material caught the platform's recommendations: they climb in the first hours and hint at whether it is worth backing it with an advertising budget. For a creator it is an argument in a conversation about rates, but a weak one on its own — without reach and engagement you cannot see whether real people who actually watched stand behind the plays. This number measures neither viewers nor revenue.

Already know what you need?

Describe the task: the format, the deadline and the amount or the barter. Creators from your industry will apply on their own, and you choose from the applications.

Frequently asked questions

Are views and reach the same thing?

No. Reach counts people, views count plays, so one person can generate many views. That is why reach can be equal to the number of plays or lower than it, but never higher.

Can views be inflated artificially?

They can, and it usually shows. The signal is a large number of plays with barely any comments, and an audience from countries where the creator has never published before.

Does autoplay inflate views?

On platforms with a scrolling feed yes, because the recording starts on its own before anyone decides to watch it. So with video look at the average watch time too, not just the number of plays.
