What are followers?
Short answer
Followers are the people subscribed to a creator's profile, who may be shown their content in the feed. That number says how big the account is and nothing more: it does not tell you how many of those people really watch, comment and trust the author. That is why brands ask for screenshots from the statistics, not for the number under the profile name.
What does the follower count really mean?
Only that someone once clicked “follow”. Some of those people have not looked at the profile in a long time, some subscribed after one popular post and never came back, and some the algorithm skips anyway when it shows new content. The number grows and almost never falls, so over time it describes the history of an account rather than its strength today.
How are followers different from reach?
Followers are the list of people subscribed, reach is the number of people who actually saw a particular piece of content. Those two numbers can diverge sharply in both directions: content can travel far beyond the profile, or fail to reach even part of the followers. When pricing a collaboration, the more sensible reference point is the reach of recent posts and engagement, because they show the state of the account over the last few weeks rather than over its whole history.
Why should you not choose a creator on follower count alone?
Because it is the only statistic visible from outside, so it is the easiest to inflate and the most often overrated. An account with a smaller but lively audience usually sells more than a bigger one where nobody comments. A brand is better off looking at reach, saves and the conversations under the content — and a creator is better off showing that data before anyone asks.

- Fake followers
- Bought or inactive accounts among the followers. They lift the number on the profile, lower engagement and leave the campaign landing in a void. Read more
- Reach
- The number of people who saw the material. It does not say how many of them reacted or bought — which is why it is read together with engagement, not instead of it. Read more
- Target audience
- The people a brand wants to reach: who they are, where they live, what they are looking for. You choose the creator to fit them, not to fit the biggest follower count. Read more
- Niche
- The narrow topic a creator's audience is built around — beauty, food, cars. The narrower the niche, the more accurate the delivery at smaller reach. Read more
Frequently asked questions
How many followers do you need to earn from collaborations?
There is no threshold. Brands invite small accounts to work with them too, as long as the topic fits the product and the audience really reacts to the content. The match counts for more than the size of the profile.
Why is the follower count falling?
Most often because the platform is clearing out inactive accounts and ones that break its rules, or because the profile changed topic. A drop after a clean-up usually improves engagement, so it is not bad news.
Can you check the quality of followers from outside?
Partly. You can see the comments, the reactions and the pace at which the account grows. Only the owner of the profile knows the breakdown by country, age and gender, so you have to ask for that data before a collaboration.
