UGC Creative Testing in Paid Ads: Hooks, Variants and Reading the Results

Short answer
Testing UGC creatives in paid ads makes sense when each test checks a single change, most often the hook. Order two or three clearly different versions, set up an A/B test in Meta or a Split Test in TikTok, give it at least a week and pick the winner by cost per result. Record conclusions in one table and carry them into the next brief.
Testing UGC creatives in paid ads starts with the question the test is meant to answer. A brand orders several hooks and edits from a creator, drops them all into one campaign and, three days later, switches off the ones that "don't work". A result collected that way usually says more about chance than about the material. Below we explain how to plan variants, how to set up a test in Meta and TikTok, and how to read the results so that the next batch of videos beats the previous one.
Hypothesis first, variants second
Each test should check one change. If two videos differ in hook, creator, music and offer all at once, and one performs better, you cannot tell what made the difference. Write the hypothesis down in one sentence, for example: "A hook built around the customer's problem will earn more clicks than a before-and-after hook." The versions you order follow from it.
Meta describes the same principle in its help article on A/B testing: you compare versions of an ad strategy by changing a variable such as the image, text, audience or placement. With UGC, the variable tested most often is the creative, meaning the video itself.
What to test in a UGC video
Not every element carries the same weight. In practice, the order of tests usually looks like this:
- The hook, or the first seconds. This is what viewers judge before deciding whether to scroll on. The same middle section with three different openings is the cheapest test, because the creator only records a few extra shots.
- The narrative angle. Problem and solution, review, comparison, unboxing, "a day with the product". This is a bigger change than the hook and usually needs its own script.
- The creator. The same script recorded by two people shows whether your audience responds better to a particular voice, age or style.
- Length and editing. A shorter cut, a different pace, captions or none.
- The call to action. What the viewer should do and which benefit they hear at the end.
How to write the hooks and the structure of the video is covered in UGC video script: hook, structure and a ready template. This article deals with what happens to the versions after recording.
Different creators are also a test variable. You can find UGC profiles across categories in the catalogue of creators in Poland.
How many variants to order
More variants do not mean a faster answer. Every version needs part of the budget to collect data, so on a small budget ten videos spread impressions so thinly that none reaches a reliable result. In its creative best practices, TikTok advises using creatives with big differences when testing. Small tweaks, such as a different caption colour, rarely give a readable result.
A sensible starting point is two or three versions of one variable. When ordering, agree with the creator how many hooks and edits they deliver, in which aspect ratios, and whether the files may be used in paid ads. The scope of usage rights belongs in the contract before recording, not after the test, when the winning video is about to get a bigger budget.
How to set up a test in Meta
In Meta Ads Manager, an A/B test shows each version to a different part of the audience and makes sure nobody sees both. Meta picks the winner based on cost per result. According to Meta's help centre, once the test is running you can no longer change the variable you are testing: if you test the creative, you cannot edit the headline or text. Prepare every version before launch.
Keep the learning phase in mind as well. Meta's learning phase article says an ad set usually exits it after about 50 results in the week after its last significant edit. If your goal is a purchase and the campaign brings a few purchases a week, a purchase-based test will be very slow. In that case it is more honest to test hooks on an earlier signal, such as clicks or add-to-cart, and to note clearly that this is not yet proof of sales.
How to prepare a creator's video for partnership ads is explained in UGC in Meta ads.
How to set up a test in TikTok
TikTok Ads Manager offers Split Test. According to TikTok's guide, you select a test variable and a key metric that the system uses to compare two ad groups. TikTok recommends running the test for at least 7 days and keeping its power, the estimated chance of finding a winner, above 80%. If the power is lower, raise the budget or extend the test instead of hoping for luck.
If the video is to run from the creator's account, the permission setup is described in TikTok Spark Ads with creator content.
How to read the results
Metrics in the dashboard answer different questions, so read them in funnel order:
- Viewer retention. The share of views of the first seconds and the average watch time show whether the hook works.
- Clicks. CTR shows whether the video persuades people to go further. A video with a strong hook and a weak CTR grabs attention but does not sell.
- Cost per result. The cost of a purchase, lead or other campaign goal. This is where the budget decision is made.
Do not declare a winner after one day. If Meta does not find a winner, the test results show a recap and often a recommendation to extend the test. No winner is information too: the difference between versions is too small to matter at this budget.
Record results in a single table: date, hypothesis, versions, budget, decision metric, result and conclusion. After a few tests you will see patterns, for instance that problem-led hooks beat price-led ones for your brand. That conclusion goes into the next brief.
When to replace the winning video
Even the best video wears out over time, because the same people see it more and more often. Meta shows this in the Delivery column: according to Meta's description of the recommendations, the "Creative limited" status appears when cost per result is higher than in your past ads but less than twice as high, and "Creative fatigue" when it is at least twice as high. That is the signal to order new hooks for a proven angle rather than change everything at once.
Material in a paid ad is still commercial communication. If the video features a creator, the collaboration label must be clear to the viewer, in line with UOKiK's influencer marketing guidance.
How Blogger Bank helps you order test variants
For testing, you need several versions from one creator or the same script from several people. On Blogger Bank you post a brief with a description, the number of hooks and a budget, and UGC creators from Poland apply themselves. As of 21 August 2026 the database had 4,519 UGC creators, and 99% of tasks received applications.
Payment is secured until the material is accepted – that is secured payment. The commission is 5% on the brand side and 5% on the creator side. Create a brand account and post your first brief.
Frequently asked questions
How do you test UGC creatives in paid ads?
Start with one hypothesis and one variable, such as the hook. Order two or three clearly different versions, run an A/B test in Meta or a Split Test in TikTok, and judge them by cost per result, not by the first day.
What should you test first in a UGC video?
The hook, meaning the first seconds of the video, is usually tested first. It is the cheapest test, because the creator only records a few extra openings for the same footage. After that, test the angle, creator, length and call to action.
How many UGC creative variants should you order for a test?
A sensible start is two or three versions of one variable. Each variant needs part of the budget to collect data, so on a small budget ten videos spread impressions too thinly for any of them to give a reliable result.
How long should a creative test run on TikTok?
TikTok recommends running a Split Test for at least 7 days and keeping test power, the estimated chance of finding a winner, above 80%. If power is lower, raise the budget or extend the test rather than deciding on incomplete data.
Can you change an ad during a Meta A/B test?
According to Meta's help centre, once an A/B test is running you cannot change the variable being tested. If you test the creative, you cannot edit the headline or ad text. Prepare and check every video and copy version before launch.
Which metric should decide the winning UGC creative?
Make the budget decision on cost per result, meaning the cost of a purchase, lead or other campaign goal. Viewer retention shows hook strength and CTR shows whether the video earns clicks, but neither proves sales on its own.
What should you do if an A/B test finds no winner?
No winner means the difference between versions is too small at the given budget. Meta then shows a recap and often recommends extending the test. You can also prepare versions that differ more, for example with a different narrative angle.
When should you replace a well-performing UGC video in ads?
When cost per result rises clearly. Meta flags an ad as Creative fatigue when its cost per result is at least twice as high as in your past ads. At that point, order new hooks for the proven angle.
