Instagram Creator or Business Account: Which to Choose for Brand Deals

Short answer
For brand deals, a creator account is usually the better fit. Both professional account types give you insights, branded content tools and the option to connect your account to collaboration platforms through Meta's official API. A business account is designed for operations that sell products and may have restricted access to licensed music. You can change the account type for free at any time.
Instagram creator or business account – almost everyone who starts working with brands asks this question. Both types are professional accounts and give you insights, branded content tools and the option to connect external platforms. They differ in details that only matter in day-to-day work: music in Reels, the message inbox and how the account presents itself. Below we explain what really depends on the account type and what does not.
Personal, creator and business: three types, two of them professional
Instagram has personal accounts and professional accounts, and a professional account is set up either as a creator account or a business account. In the Instagram Help Center, Meta describes creator accounts as best for public figures, content producers, artists and influencers, and business accounts as best for retailers, local businesses, brands, organisations and service providers.
Switching to a professional account is free and reversible. You can change your professional account type at any time in settings or go back to a personal account, as described in the guide to switching account types. One thing surprises many people: if your personal account is private, switching to a professional account makes it public, and pending follow requests are accepted automatically.
What you get with both professional account types
Most of the tools that matter for brand deals are shared by creator and business accounts:
- Insights. A professional account shows insights for the account and for individual posts. According to the Help Center, you can pick a time range within the past 90 days. If you switch back to a personal account, you lose in-app insights, while the data is kept for 90 days.
- Category and contact button. A category appears below your profile picture, and you can add an email address or phone number so a brand can reach you directly.
- Professional inbox. Messages are sorted into three folders – Primary, General and Requests – which helps you keep a brand enquiry from getting lost among ordinary messages.
- Branded content. The paid partnership label and permission for a brand to boost your content work on professional accounts.
Where the difference shows
The difference people notice most is music. In its rules on access to the licensed music library, Meta says that certain business accounts and certain types of posts do not have access to the library, because its music must not be used for commercial purposes. If your Reels rely on popular tracks, a business account may get in the way. Keep in mind that having a track in the app does not give you the right to use it in a brand ad – we cover this in the article on using a popular Instagram sound in a brand ad.
The second difference is what the account is for. A business account is designed for an operation that sells products or services and needs sales tools. A creator account is designed for a person who publishes content and works with brands. If you run your own brand alongside your creator work, consider two separate accounts instead of one that has to do both jobs.
Instagram changes its feature set regularly, and not always in every country at the same time. Before deciding, check in the app settings what is available for your account rather than relying on comparisons from a year ago.
Branded content and ad disclosure
The branded content tool adds a paid partnership label with the brand's name above the post and tags the brand. Under Instagram's branded content rules, you must tag the business partner whenever there is an exchange of value between you and the brand, even on a personal account. A professional account, however, is what lets you use the tools and meet the eligibility requirements.
Instagram's label does not replace Polish rules. In its influencer marketing recommendations, the Polish consumer authority UOKiK expects advertising to be disclosed clearly and unambiguously in the content itself. If a brand also wants to run your content as a paid ad, that is a separate permission and a separate point for the contract – see our article on partnership ads from the creator's side. This is not legal advice; if in doubt, consult a lawyer about your specific situation.
Connecting platforms and a Facebook Page
External services pull Instagram insights through Meta's official API, which, according to the developer documentation, works with professional accounts: business and creator. A personal account does not expose insights through this API, so collaboration platforms usually cannot connect it.
Linking a Facebook Page is not required to use a professional account. According to the Help Center, it adds options such as running ads from the Page, a shared inbox and third-party app integrations. Some services use an API version that requires a linked Page, so check what a specific platform expects when you connect.
How to choose and when to switch
- Choose a creator account if you publish content, earn from brand deals and want more freedom with music.
- Choose a business account if the account represents an operation that sells its own products or services.
- Do not switch during a campaign. Do it between collaborations and afterwards check that insights and platform connections still work.
- Refresh the connection in services that pull your insights if they stop updating after the switch.
In practice, a brand rarely checks whether you have a creator or business account. It looks at your insights, audience and content quality, and the account type is simply what makes that data available at all.
Instagram on Blogger Bank
On Blogger Bank you do not send screenshots of your insights. You connect your Instagram account and grant access through the official API, and your stats appear in your profile and update automatically. As of 21 August 2026, the database had 2,497 connected Instagram accounts. How to use this data when applying is explained in the article on how to apply to a brand brief.
Brands post briefs with a description and budget, and you choose which ones to apply to. The commission is 5% on the creator's side and 5% on the brand's side. Create a creator account and connect your Instagram.
Frequently asked questions
Instagram creator or business account – which is better for brand deals?
For brand deals, a creator account is usually the better fit, because Meta designs it for content producers and influencers. A business account is meant for retailers, brands and service providers that sell their own products or services.
Do creator and business accounts get the same insights?
Both professional account types give you in-app insights for the account and for individual posts. According to the Instagram Help Center, you can choose a time range within the past 90 days, whichever type you pick.
Is switching Instagram account type paid or permanent?
Switching is free and reversible. You can change your professional account type in settings at any time or go back to a personal account. However, a private personal account becomes public when you switch to a professional one.
Why are some music tracks missing on a business account?
Meta restricts certain business accounts and certain post types from its licensed music library, because that music must not be used for commercial purposes. Creators whose Reels rely on popular music usually do better with a creator account.
Do I need a professional account for the paid partnership label?
Meta's branded content tools and eligibility requirements apply to professional accounts. The duty to tag a business partner when value is exchanged applies to all accounts, including personal ones, and in Poland UOKiK also expects clear ad disclosure.
Can a personal Instagram account be connected to a collaboration platform?
Usually not. Meta's official API, which platforms use to pull Instagram insights, works with professional accounts: business and creator. A personal account does not expose insights through it, so switch to a professional account before connecting.
Does a creator account have to be linked to a Facebook Page?
Linking a Page is not required to use a professional account. It adds options such as running ads from the Page and a shared inbox. Some services require a linked Page, so check what a specific platform expects.
Do brands care whether I have a creator or business account?
Rarely. Brands look mainly at your insights, audience and content quality. The account type matters mostly because a professional account lets you show verified insights and use the branded content tools.
